Punk Magic is a fan format for Magic the Gathering. It has single player minigames and mechanics that encourage you to recycle your old cards and unplayed favourites into new fun spells. As you play you will eventually have enough cards that you can make a cube, a custom limited collection of cards you can draft with friends!

I made this game originally as a way to play with all my unloved cards that I was never going to use again. Eventually it grew from a single player RPG to a fun format all it's own, a way to make building a Magic cube into a fun game in itself. Craft the Nine Powers, defeat the Five Wizards of the Citadel, or make a cube that changes after every game you play with it.

Welcome to the Lands Beneath the Citadel

Since magic came into the world 30 years ago it has been controlled by the Wizards of the Citadel, powerful mages who manage the creation and distribution of spells. They rule all the lands around them. They grow rich from selling their spellcraft, they dictate the laws of magic, and walk between different planes of reality at will.

You are a punk.

You dictate nothing. You live a life at the whims of those who have power and magic. You exist because the world hasn’t killed you yet, because you scrounge and scrape together whatever those wizards throw out of their towers. You experiment and craft homemade spells with zine witches, make bets on mana races or golden fish to get coins, and spend that coin to heal your friends, eat street food, and maybe one day get enough spellpower that you can escape the Wizards of the Citadel forever.

Or at least make it so you don’t need to pay them rent.

Welcome to Magic, punk.

Beta Rules

The rules of Punk Magic are currently in beta. Some things will change as I continue to test it, but inside the rules you'll find everything you need to play and make your own Punk Magic cube including:

  • Single Player Gigs: Mini games you play by yourself to augment cards, add and remove cards from your cube, and make your own spells.
  • No Lands? No Problem: Punks aren't landlords. Mana sinking ensures you're never flooded or screwed.
  • Citadel Runs: Tough boss battles that reward you with unique spells of your own creation, and a way to get game breaking cards out of containment. Speaking of containment...
  • Wanted Levels: After every game put a sticker on spells that were too powerful, making sure your cube balances over time, and recycling useful parts if a spell ever gets 3 or more wanted levels.
  • Multiplayer Rules: Suggestions for different multiplayer formats that get you the most out of playing with a Punk Magic cube, including rewards that let every player make spells and leave their own mark on your cube. Or just play as a standard draft or sealed!
  • Play Sheets: Sheets for tracking your single player games and the ever changing contents of your developing cube, as well as custom cards you can use for drafting rewards at the end of a multiplayer game.
  • Laws of Spellcrafting: Handy rules for making sure augmented and custom spells still make sense within the rules of Magic. Rules that you are also encouraged to break!
  • And more!

Feel free to post below with any comments or questions you may have. If you're nice about it, I'll answer!

The rules of Punk Magic are and will always be free. Also free for you to iterate, hack, and spin off into your own wild formats. A suggested donation is appreciated, or you can support my work through Patreon.
